Whose ready for some baked churro bites dipped in hot chocolate sauce? They are meant to be for tea time, but not sure they will last until then 😉 …. Original recipe belongs to Gemma Stafford from ‘Bigger Bolder Baking’ but have tweaked it around to suit my own taste … suggest you do the same! 🙂
Ingredients for the Churros:
All Purpose Flour: 1 cup
Brown Sugar: 2 tbsp
Salt: 1/4 tsp
Unsalted Butter: 1/2 cup or 113 grams
Vanilla Essence: 1/2 tsp
Eggs (at room temperature): 3
For the coating:
Cinnamon: 1 tsp
White Sugar: 1/4 cup
Salt: 1 tsp
Ingredients for the Hot Chocolate Sauce:
Semi-sweet chocolate chips: 180 grams
Milk: 2 and 1/2 cups
Cornflour: 1/2 tsp
Method for the churros:
Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Line your baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
In a saucepan, add the unsalted butter, water, sugar, and salt. Heat and stir until the butter melts.
Add the all purpose flour to the saucepan and whisk continuously until it forms a dough.
Continue to fold the dough with the help of a spatula over low heat for approximately 1 minute. Remove from the heat and set aside.
Meanwhile, in a separate bowl whisk together the eggs and vanilla essence.
Once the dough has cooled slightly add the egg mixture a little at a time and continue to mix until well combined. (it looks like a mess at first but keep mixing and it’ll start to look better). Ps: I used 3 large eggs by mistake, and therefore needed to add more flour to the mixture to make it thicker and of piping consistency. The dough should be thick enough to hold it’s shape after being piped.
Add the dough to your piping bag fitted with a star nozzle. Pipe out the churro’s in whichever shape you desire.
Bake the churro’s in your pre-heated oven at 200 degrees Celsius for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown. Once the churros have baked, switch off your oven and keep them in there for at least another 10 minutes. (I always leave the oven door slightly open for this step).
In a separate bowl, mix together the white sugar, cinnamon and salt. Toss the churro’s in the sugar mixture as soon as they are out of the oven.
Method for the Hot Chocolate Sauce:
In a saucepan, add the milk and allow it to simmer.
Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and whisk until the chocolate has melted.
Mix the corn flour in approximately 2 tsp of water and add to the melted chocolate.
Keep on whisking until the chocolate sauce starts to thicken.
